I posted this meme to Facebook with a quote by Philip Yancey 5 years ago and agreed with it. But now I look at it and I dont agree with it. I dont think the thief converted out of plain fear. I believe he truly realized Jesus was who He claimed to be. The thief may have had a educated religious background and put it together, although there's no mention of his life except that he was thief. I just dont see any case for a last minute verbal conversion will help anyone unless it's born out of real faith, and not just out fear. I know lots of people who verbally say "Jesus is Lord" but don't truly believe it but use it to placate people around them. At judgement we will be informed whether he "knows" us....and the worse thing to hear at that point is "I never knew you".Now I don't have any disrespect for Yancey as I've read several of his books. But I will have to disagree with this point. Agree or disagree??
